(Some of) the Mechanics of Critique
This instructional video situates the method of art critique within the framework of European colonization—a total world-building project starting in the 15th century. Raskin argues that instructional habits and cultural biases stem from assumptions rooted in racist, misogynist violence, contending that art educators who fail to reckon with these complexities harm their students. The work emphasizes the decentering of Enlightenment Era philosophies, not only because they limit understanding but because they germinated in white supremacy, classism, homophobia, and misogyny. Published on Hyperallergic magazine with an introduction by Laura Raicovich, this animation has become a tool utilized by teaching artists across practice-based education in the arts.
