Mending and Repair in Response was a two-person show with artist Jesse Harrod, at Fleisher Ollman Gallery in Philadelphia. Connecting with the work of 20th-century self-taught artists like Joseph Yoakum, James Castle, and Eugene Von Bruenchenhein, Raskin updated historical markers of outsiderness with contemporary notions of queerness, gender identity, and disability. For the exhibition, Raskin repurposed plywood from their previous large-scale installations about nuclear war and isolation to create smaller-scale constructions showing gratitude to influences including Ellsworth Kelly and Rasheed Araeen. As an artist identifying on a queer and disabled register, Raskin is oriented obliquely to normative structures of gender expression, learning, fatigue, and chronic pain; factors requiring constant negotiation that produce conditions of isolation. In an act of homage, they created connections between their own strategies and those of artists and scholars whose work emerged from horizons neglected by mainstream contexts. The exhibition became a material attempt to reconfigure ways that embodied realities necessitate constant adaptation so repair can occur, not as a solution, but as an acknowledgement enabling the continuation of movement, care, love, and action.
