Modeled after the concrete bunkers built by forced and conscripted labor in Nazi Germany along the Atlantic coast of Europe, the Atlantic Wall network intended to repel Allied attacks on occupied Europe. Stützpunkt draws from Raskin's research on Organization Todt, the civil and military arm of Nazi Germany responsible for its most massive infrastructure projects including the autobahn and various other bunkers and fortifications. Too large and costly to remove, remnants of the Atlantic Wall still litter the coast of Europe. During on-site research Raskin realized that many of these bunkers are sinking into the sand. This informed the decision for the installation to be placed on a slanted plinth so it would appear as though sliding or sinking. Viewers could enter the bunker through a submarine door, finding the blue-light-bathed interior completely bare, save a replica of a transceiver constructed from foam and cardboard; with all instructions and handles rendered by hand, any attempts at communication are rendered moot.
